2.11 - Death Valley

Last night the kids were up far later than they should have been, making a fort using Isidore’s bed sheets up until the moment their parents started arguing right outside the door. They don’t fall asleep until early morning, when Leya finally stops crying. Even so, they’re up on time for school, sitting in an uncomfortable silence.

Leya breaks the silence first. “What’s goanna happen to us if they get a divorce?”

“Well first of all they can’t get a divorce because they’re not even married.” Leya’s lip pulls into a quivering pout but before she can start crying again, Isidore continues. “But if they do split up you don’t have to worry. I won’t let them split -us- up, okay? We’re the kids here but they’re the ones acting like kids.”

Bayrose waits until noon for Gem to return home before dialling the person listed as number three on her speed dial. He’s at her doorstep almost immediately.

“Hey Rose. How’s it going? I thought we weren’t going to meet up again til the weekend? Wasn’t Gem getting suspicious?”

“Gem isn’t here.” She thought she was still angry, but as soon as she says those words out loud, it breaks her heart.

He opens his arms and she falls into his embrace. “We… we had a fight last night and he left, and he said he’d be here in the morning but he wasn’t so I called his parent’s house and Mrs. Sari said he hadn’t shown up last night and I didn’t know who else to call!”

Gator sighs, hiding his heartbreak over the fact she’s only calling him because Gem was having a fit. He’s tried being the perfect friend and boyfriend but she’s never even humoured his ideas of being together.

Maybe today he can convince her, but first, he has to cheer her up.

“Listen, the spring festival is up and running. Would you care to join me? Most people will be at school or work right now, so no one will pay us any attention.”

“You know I don’t like being too public…”

Gator puts on what he thinks is his best “kicked puppy” face and with a sigh, Bayrose finally smiles. “Okay fine… just this once.”

There are a few people at the festival who look up at the couple curiously. Without a word to each other, Bayrose and Gator separate, Bay to the dance floor while Gator partakes in some small talk before moving to the opposite side of the dance floor.

The skies open up into a downpour that sends people running for their cars, and Gator finally dances over to his girlfriend.

He shakes his wet hair with a grin on his face. “You’d think people would get used to a little rain growing up in a town like this.”

“Psh, I’ve only lived here a few years and I’m already used to it.” Bayrose answers. “Of course, this means I’ll have to make sure the kids shower when they get home. I don’t want them getting sick.”

Just when Gator was beginning to feel like this was a real date…

“Kids? Last time we talked, Isidore was your only child, our only child. Why do you talk about Leya like she’s yours? Once you and Gem break up she won’t be your problem anymore.“

“But Leya isn’t a problem…” Bay’s face falls as she considers the possibility of never holding her sweet little girl again, or her wonderful father.

“Gator, I’m sorry, but I really don’t think I can leave Gem. I think I still love him.”

“You think you still love him? You mean you’re not sure?”

She shrugs, not meeting his eyes. “I guess? How can you even tell if you’re in love with someone anyway?”

“When you love someone, they become your everything.” A smile rises onto his face as he thinks about his own feelings for the beautiful girl in front of him. “You can’t get them out of your head no matter what; their smile, their happiness, becomes your whole world, their sadness hurts you more than your own sadness ever could, and you have a drive to do anything in your power to make them happy again. Even for just a moment.”

She considers his words, thinking about her relationship with Gem as a soft smile grows on her lips. “Huh… guess I am in love then. Who knew.”

“I’m guessing the person you’re in love with isn’t me?”

She shakes her head. “I’m sorry, Gator, but I don’t think I can do this with you anymore. You’re right about me not wanting to be without Gem, and I’m going to need to man up in order to make him realize I love him.”

He keeps a fake smile on, even though his heart is breaking on the inside. “I can’t say I’m not disappointed you’re picking him, but if being with him makes you happy-“

“It does. Gem and I have made a family for ourselves, and I need to show him he isn’t the only one willing to put an effort into our relationship. Thank you for opening my eyes.”

If he thought it wasn’t possible for his heart to break anymore than it already was… “Of course. I’m glad I could help.”

They jump apart as Bay’s phone rings. It’s a number she doesn’t recognize but she answers anyway. “Hello? …. Yes, this is Ms. Love… yes… what? Is he okay? Yes, yes, I’ll be right there.”

Gator gives her a quizzical look but she shakes her head. “Gem was abducted last night. The hospital just called telling me he’s been cleared for home care.”

Gator has more questions, but Bayrose ignores him and she runs out of the park. Gem was in trouble, but he’s okay, and now its her turn to be there for him.

Bayrose hugs her Gem as soon as they’re through the door. Despite him being cleared to go home, Bayrose had plenty of questions that needed to be answered, and then they had to drop the kids off at Grandma Dora’s for the night so Gem could get some actual rest.

“I’m so sorry for not coming back.” Thats the first thing he says to her, mistaking her tears for her still being upset with him.”I wanted to come back as soon as I hit the sidewalk, but then I saw a green light in the sky and then the next thing I know I’m on the beach where we used to have bonfires and its mid day.”

“I’m not mad at you.” She cries, holding him close. “And I’m so sorry for last night. You were right, I have been pushing you away and its not fair. I love you, Gem, and I never want to let you go.  I know the doctors said that this… parasite won’t kill you, but I want you to know right now that I will be here for you and love you for as long as I can. Be it for just another moment, or forever. I love you.”

He dips her backwards, kissing her fiercely as a response. Her words were exactly what he needed to hear right now.

“We don’t have to go to Sunset Valley if you don’t want to.” He whispers.

“I know we don’t.” She answers. “But you want to go, and I think I do need a break from singing for a while. Six months won’t kill me, and the kids will love being able to see a new town. Tell your supervisor we’ll go.”

"Death Valley" is a song by Fall Out Boy, and since I came up with this plot line, I knew it would be the name for the chapter where Bayrose and Gem reconciled. There was also supposed to be a sex scene at the end, but I decided to delete it.

This is only step one for these two, but I think they're past the hardest part. You all got a nicer picture of Isidore up at the top, but apparently I have no other actual photos of him so far so... oops. >_> I'll fix that.

The next chapter or two will take place in Sunset Valley for the duration of their trip so it'll take some setting up. This chapter was originally going to be very different, but I think I like how it came out instead.

Thanks for reading!

2.10 - Say Something

Despite the days and weeks that have passed since Alexis disappeared, the police are no where close to finding her. Dora’s convinced that they aren’t even looking anymore. Alexis left a letter saying that she was going to go look for Blaine because she missed him, and the police took that as an adult deciding to move away. Dora knows Alexis isn’t always in full control of her mind, but no one listens to her!

It worries Gem that no one seems to care about Alexis going missing. She’s an older woman and has gone through a great deal of trauma throughout her life.

“It’s because she’s a witch.” Dora mutters. “Racism exists even here, you know. The officers still have to report to the Sunset Valley PD and they think she isn’t worth their efforts because she’s a witch and should be able to think for herself. We’re still not considered people, even in our haven. It’s ridiculous!”

Gem knew a bit about the racism in other towns because of stories from his dad’s childhood, but he didn’t realize it was quite this bad right at home.

Isidore’s birthday comes and goes, and in September he starts school. Gem buys him the best cake at the bakery, hoping to make it a big affair, but in the end its only them and Leya.

“Why isn’t mom here for my birthday?”

Because she thinks I’m going to leave her like everyone else. Because she’s a selfish bitch. Because she’s out at the bar drinking while pretending to be out working. Because she doesn’t want to live in the real world.

But of course he doesn’t say that out loud. Instead: “She’s just very busy with work right now, squirt. She’ll be here in the morning before you go to school, okay?”

Bayrose gets home around 2 in the morning, smelling like booze and missing her high heels. Gem tries to give her a hug but she shies away.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing! I just don’t want to hug you right now, okay? I’m tired and I want to go to bed. And the kids in their room?”

“Of course they are.” Gem sighs. “Isidore and I spent the whole day decorating his room. You know, because today was his birthday. Why weren’t you there? I even called you!”

For a moment, Bayrose looks regretful. “I thought his birthday was tomorrow. I invited-“ Her words trail off, her lower lips quivering before she regains her composure. “Well, that doesn’t matter anymore. I’ll have to tell him in the morning how sorry I am and see if I can make it up to him.”

“What about making it up to me?” Gem asks. “Bayrose, I know your mom’s disappearance scared you, but I need you to come back. I can’t raise Leya and Isi all by myself! They need you too, heck, -I- need you too. Why are you avoiding us?”

“My mother is gone, Gem.” She spits at him. “Beacan’s dead, Blaine’s gone, now her. What the fuck is stopping you from leaving too? I’m certainly not. I’ll do better with Isi and Leya, but I’m not going to give you the chance to hurt me.”

“I’m not going to leave you.” He sighs, reaching for her again.

She flinches backwards, and then shakes her head. “Fine. Then I’ll leave. I’m spending tonight at Dora’s. Goodnight.”

Leya’s birthday flies by and she joins Isidore at elementary school.

Isidore hates school, and unlike Leya, he always goes to play after school rather than do his homework. It never fails though, as soon as dad gets home Leya tells on him and he’s grounded until dinner.

One day Gem gets some exciting news from work.

“They need a delegate to go to Sunset Valley for a few months to talk about occult rights and I was at the top of the list! What do you say about going on a vacation for a bit with me? They’re even offering to homeschool the kids if we bring them.”

“Are you kidding? You want me to just drop everything a follow you around like a docile little trophy?”

Gem can’t believe his ears. “I didn’t say anything even close to that!”

“You have been nothing but touchy and rude for months now, and don’t think no one’s noticed! I have been more than patient and I thought getting away from Moonlight Falls for a bit could HELP you! Why are you being so rude?”

“You don’t care about me!” Bayrose shoots back. “You only care about your career and how YOU will benefit from this trip! I need to be here working on my career and following MY dream, not yours.”

“I have never, nor will I ever get in the way of your music, Bay. I know you love it, but I also know that you haven’t been going out every night to sing or do auditions. I don’t know why you’ve been avoiding me and the kids or why you keep acting like I’m doing something wrong, but dammit Bay, can’t you see that this trip is the best thing for us? Or don’t you even care about us anymore?”

“How can you say there even is an us anymore? I’m not going to stop you from going right back into Fawn’s arms, or anybody else's for that matter. I know your goddam secretary has been trying to get into your pants!”

It it wasn’t for his father’s lessons advocating against violence, and his mother’s meditation lessons, he may have slapped her for even suggesting he’d cheat on her.

“I’m going to spend the night at my parents’ place. In the morning, if you’re up for it, we can talk about this again. But right now, I need time away from you.”

He steps out into the cold rain and stops at the sidewalk to think. Life has been hell between him and Bayrose for a while now, she’s been keeping him at arm’s distance ever since Alexis disappeared, and he knows its because she think he’s going to leave but he won’t! He’s just- leaving now… Wait, that’s not a good idea.

With a sigh, he turns back towards the house to head back inside but a bright green light from the heavens grabs his attention instead.

Within a blink, he’s gone.

THERE. Melissa, I know I promised you an alien abduction over a year ago but I couldn't fit it in earlier! But it worked so well for this generation! (Couple + Half siblings. Alien baby WILL NOT BE CHEATING. HAH.)

Leya is so lovely. Why couldn't I have had her in my previous play through of Gem's story? She would have been such a pretty heir! Ah well. Isidore is pretty damn adorable too, and I can't wait to see heir #2 (if we ever get there...).

Gem is at level 4 of the political career and Bayrose is at lvl 5 of singing. Gem is a lvl 1 celebrity and Bay is lvl 2. I've been hesitant about revealing that part of their roll since I've been having glitches with the celebrity progression but it seems to have fixed itself after Bay hit lvl 2 so... yeah.

Gen Goal: 5 Star Celebrity (Only Bayrose needs to hit this)

2.09 - Give Me Novacine

Gem hummed to himself as he began mixing the ingredients for today’s breakfast. Outside the winter raged hard and threatened the windows with its windy howl, but inside the temperature was set to a comfortable warmth, at least comfortable enough to be walking around in your underwear for most of the day.

In truth, it was far too early to be up, but after a few promotions at work, holidays were short and far in between. The holidays were upon them, so he’d taken the opportunity to wake up before his girlfriend in order to take some of the daily chores off her shoulders.

 Speaking of girlfriend…

“Gem, I smell something burning. Is everything okay down here?”

He sighs in annoyance. “I wanted to surprise you… surprise?”

She laughs, pulling him on for an embrace. “What a wonderful surprise. Merry Christmas, my love.”

He kisses her, enjoying the feel of her soft skin on his. She’d lost weight after her miscarriage last month, but it wasn’t as bad as the first time they thought they’d been expecting. Blaine’s comment to him in the graveyard had confused Gem at first, but now it helped him and Bayrose move forward together.

They’re about to head back to bed together when a baby’s wail from upstairs alerts them that “the twins” are awake.

Isidore is the source of the wails, screaming for attention while little Leya rocks back and forth in her crib, playing with her feet. She giggles happily as her papa pulls her out of the crib.

Bay and Gem’s attempts at having a biological child together have been fruitless so far, but they still have a full house.

“Leya noisy.” Isidore states, eyeing the other baby. “No like her.”

“She’s your sister.” Bayrose smiles. “And it looks to me like you were the noisy one this morning.”

“No! Leya noisy! And smelly! And ugly!”

They have this conversation almost every morning. Bayrose would worry if it wasn’t for the arguments she and her brother used to have when they were toddlers.

A small stab hits her in the heart when he remembers Beacan, but she quickly pushes it away. She doesn’t like to think about him.

Gem doesn’t notice his girlfriend’s unease. He’s too focused on his little girl. It took a while and a few favours, but he was granted custody when she was only a few months old. Fawn hasn’t even asked to see her since it was decided, and part of him is happy for it. He wants his little girl growing up seeing Bayrose as her mother.

Leya hates getting dressed for the day, so Gem and Bayrose leave her in her pyjamas. Isidore wants to be a big boy, she he happily puts on his little suit for the Christmas Party and struts it in front of Leya. She doesn’t understand why he seems to be so proud of himself. It’s just clothes.

This is their first Christmas living together, and a few since Beacan died and Blaine disappeared from town. Most of the time, they spent Christmas with Gem’s parents, but this year their families will be meeting for the first time. Everything has been set up for days, so while the kids spend time in the playroom, Bay and Gem spend some quality time together.

After Leya’s birth, Gem dyed his hair black to better match his step mother. Coral was always more of a mother to him than the woman who gave him his genetics.

And she makes his dad happy. A little too happy if you ask Gem. He never did get used to seeing his parents acting like love struck teenagers, a food twenty years into their marriage.

Trinity is used to it. Her parents bore her terribly.

Alexis aged quickly after she lost her boys. Dora claims that her mind isn’t as lost as it was the first few days and weeks after Beacan’s death, but Alexis barely speaks to anyone else, even Bayrose. At the party she looks nervous, constantly holding herself close and staying in a corner.

After dinner (with plasma fruit burgers for Gem’s parents), Trinity turns on the radio and Dora pulls Alexis in for a slow dance. Her patience is paralleled by none. Bayrose only wishes she could be as good a partner to Gem.

The party was a hit, and all four grandparents were thrilled to spend time with the toddlers. Everyone goes home when it begins to get dark, even though its still early. So early in fact that Bayrose gets a few calls for Christmas sing-o-grams and goes out to fulfill them. Sometimes it feels like whenever Gem has time off, Bayrose has to work, and vice versa, but thats the life of being working parents. At least someone is always home with the kids.

Winter goes, and spring comes. Bay’s work picks up and she’s even offered a few stage performances at the local park and coffee shop. With the extra money they’re planning on taking a vacation to a beach somewhere warm, but Gem can never get time off work.

Leya grows a bit in comparison to Isidore. She can talk now, and boy does she use her limited vocabulary well.

“Blocks not for eating, stupid.”

Isidore growls at her, baring his tiny little werewolf fangs. “M’hungry. I’ll eat you.”

She just giggles at him, unaware that being a werewolf or being a human means anything. He’s just her dorky brother.

It’s almost mother’s day when Gem gets call from Dora’s cell phone. A stab of unease goes through him. His mother would claim it was his fae ancestry acting up, warning him of danger, but he doesn’t believe in that nonsense.

His heart drops when he answers. “Hey Dora, what’s- … what? … No, calm down. Who-… what do you mean she’s gone? People don’t just disappear.” He doesn’t need her to explain what going on to know that final straw just broke her. She’s been strong for too long, and now her rock, her Alexis, is gone.

---

Isidore and Leya are so friggin cute. I wuv them <3 Isidore is potential Heir #1.

Alexis is "gone" not dead, FYI. More on that next chapter.
